The Berkeley Balkan Bacchanal is a monthly concert series celebrating the vibrant Bay Area Balkan music scene. Three local favorites together for one night of listening, dancing and drinking at the venerable Starry Plough in Berkeley on the 3rd Thursday of every month.

Disciples of Markos

The evening begins with The Disciples of Markos, the occasional house band, playing their renditions of classic Rebetiko songs from the 1930s. Rebetiko was the music of the Greek Underworld; songs of jail, hashish dens, knife fights, jealousy and other subjects from the seamy side of Athens.

The Red Hot Chachkas

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, the internationally-acclaimed Red Hot Chachkas infuse the klezmer tradition of Eastern European Yiddish music with jazz, rock, oldtime, classical, and latin influences in their original compositions, arrangements, and improvisations. Their contagious musical performances inspire and transform audiences.

The Helladelics

The Helladelics play the hypnotic, bluesy material of Epirus, upbeat dance tunes from Thrace, lilting songs of the islands and the odd-meters of Macedonia, as well as tastes of Armenia and Turkey
